AA offers advice for those looking to get away this Christmas

Posted by Freddy Morton

Caravan taps owners looking to get away this Christmas have been urged by the AA to plan ahead and be prepared to adapt their travel plans at short notice.

The AA expects the busiest day on the roads to be Thursday December 23rd as people begin to make their way home for festive celebrations, with 18 million cars expecting to be on the road during the Christmas getaway.

Paul Leather, AA Breakdown patrol of the year, said: "The Christmas getaway is the busiest time of the year on the roads, so if the weather's as bad as it has been over the last three weeks, it could prove a very challenging time for drivers."

With a third of drivers expected to travel over 100 miles Mr Leather recommended keeping track of weather and traffic conditions and being flexible when it comes to routes and timings.

The organisation advised drivers to carry out basic checks on their vehicles and pack a winter driving kit including warm clothing, blankets, food and drink, torch, road atlas and fully-charged mobile.

Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) chief examiner, Peter Rodger, recently urged British drivers to think about fitting winter tyres, all-season tyres, or snow socks to their vehicles to deal with tricky driving conditions.
