Brits are splurging abroad

Posted by Linda Davidson

Despite the weak economy, Brits, including those who use Propex caravan water heaters, are big spenders when on holiday.

A recent study by Thomson Holiday's Foreign Exchange found that 57 per cent of people surveyed spend whatever they like while they are on holiday and do not bother with budgeting.

Furthermore, 41 per cent of holidaymakers return with around £50 in unused foreign currency, with 75 per cent of those keeping it in a drawer for the following year, even if they have no plans to return to that country.

This means that people in the UK could be sitting on a fortune of £150 million in unused money.

"Holidays should be carefree and people work incredibly hard for their two weeks in the sun each year, so they should enjoy themselves," said Jeremy Osborne, TUI UK & Ireland director of Financial Services.

However, he said that budgeting is important to prevent nasty surprises after the holiday.

Jon Dale, publicity manager for the Camping and Caravanning Club, said that the UK public underestimate holidays in Britain.
