Campaigners support stricter drink drive measures

Posted by Linda Davidson

Campaigners have welcomed the new measures to fight drink and drug driving announced by transport secretary Philip Hammond, those with Fiamma caravan rooflights have been told.

RoadSafe said that the new measures will go some way towards streamlining and improving the way the government currently tackles the offences.

Mr Hammond suggested that, although the legal limit will not be lowered, more will be done to enforce the current restrictions.

Among the changes introduced is a withdrawal of the right to a blood test by people whose breath tests are 40 per cent and lower. This is currently being treated as a loophole by offenders, as the time taken to organise a blood test can often give drivers time to sober up.

"We welcome the thrust of this approach which targets those who are the most dangerous, but urge all drivers to remember that any alcohol puts them and others at risk – the safest approach is not to drink and drive at all," said Adrian Walsh, director of RoadSafe.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has also stated its approval of the measures.
