Crackdown on blue badge forgery has begun

Posted by Freddy Morton

Drivers and those who own Reich caravan taps may be interested to know that the government is cracking down on the number of drivers illegally using and applying for disabled badges for their vehicles.

An announcement from the Department for Transport suggested that new badges, launched on January 1st, will make it near impossible for people to fake a disability and take advantage of parking bays intended for those with mobility problems.

Transport minister Norman Baker said: "Motorists who pretend to be disabled to get some free parking are frankly disgraceful. They prevent real blue badge holders from using parking bays designed for those genuinely in need."

He added that the new measures, which will include electronically made badges with a hologram and unique serial number, will be "as secure as a banknote" and will be very hard to forge.

According to regulations set out by the blue badge scheme, disabled badge holders can park in designated disabled parking bays, on in-street parking areas free of charge and also on double and single yellow lines for up to three hours without penalty.
