Culture secretary calls on Britons to holiday at home

Posted by Freddy Morton

Motorhome owners with Propex caravan water heaters may be in a good position to capitalise on the advice of culture secretary Jeremy Hunt, who has urged British holidaymakers to consider visiting a domestic destination this year.

Speaking at the British Museum last week, Mr Hunt encouraged UK businesses to support the government's efforts to boost domestic tourism throughout 2012.

Led by national tourist board VisitEngland and supported by the home nation tourist boards of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and London, the campaign to advertise staycations is set to launch in March.

It is already backed by a number of UK companies, including caravan expert Bourne Leisure.

James Berresford, VisitEngland's chief executive, said: "This is the year to take a break at home - with so much going on throughout the country there really is no better place to be."

The government's plan was criticised by ABTA- The Travel Association, which pointed out that the outbound tourism industry makes a major contribution to the British economy.
