Cutting costs on tyres is 'a false economy'

Posted by Freddy Morton

As the start of the new academic year approaches, students have been urged not to cut costs on car tyres, owners of Propex caravan water heaters have been told.

Protyre claimed that making savings by not replacing tyres is a false economy and has huge safety implications as well.

The organisation admitted that it was aware students are often short of money and cars can be very costly to run but, whether they are driving to university for the first time or making their daily commute they must ensure their tyre tread stays above the legal limit of 1.6mm.

Micheldever retail director Simon Hirons said: "Our retail centres can offer help and advice to students to select the right tyre for the car and driving conditions to be undertaken by each student."

He added that as well as the safety implications, the fine for an illegal tyre can be as much as £2,500 and three penalty points.

All motorists have also been urged to start thinking about getting winter tyres for when the weather begins to turn.
