Don't drive under pressure this weekend

Drivers, including those with caravan accessories, have been urged to ensure their tyres are in good condition before setting off on a trip this weekend.

The bank holiday weekend is expected to see up to 15 million cars take to the road, as well as a spell of unseasonably wet and windy weather.

Driver training specialist at IAM Drive & Survive Simon Elstow said that incorrect tyre pressure could shorten their life by as much as 30 per cent, as well as adding up to five per cent to a fuel bill

"Check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold, at least once a month – and weekly is far better. And don’t be tempted to over-inflate them. This causes poor vehicle handling, reduced stability in braking, cornering and reduced grip," Mr Elstow warned.

IAM suggested that regularly checking tyres for wear and damage could mean that potential problems could be picked up before they spiral and cause the tyre to need replacing.
