Driver mistakes account for most serious crashes

Posted by Greg Throughton

Driver errors or reactions are behind the top three causes of fatal and serious crashes, Waeco caravan fridges owners have been told.

Following new research, IAM (the Institute of Advanced Motorists) has urged motorists to remember that "cars don't lose control; drivers do".

The organisation analysed the data from serious and fatal car crashes between 2005 and 2009 and revealed that the most common factors in the accidents were poor reactions and mistakes.

These included "failing to look properly", "loss of control" and "poor turn or manoeuvre" and accounted for 65.3 per cent of fatal, 61.8 per cent of serious and 68.6 per cent of slight accidents.

"Having a driving licence doesn't necessarily mean that drivers have the skills they need to be safe," said chief executive of the company Simon Best.

"The evidence is there. Accidents could be easily reduced by improving driver skills and lives could be saved," he added.

Last month, tyre manufacturer Bridgestone revealed that 71 per cent of motorists, including caravan owners, are driving with under-inflated tyres, the Independent reported.
