Drug driving measures 'should be stricter'

Posted by Freddy Morton

Drivers and those who own Comet caravan taps may be interested to hear that one charity has urged the government to do more to tackle drug driving in the UK.

According to a survey by Brake, an organisation publicising road safety awareness, 11 per cent of young drivers were found to be driving while on illegal drugs in the past year.

In the wake of this research, the charity has called on the government to crack down on how it handles those who have been found to be reckless behind the wheel as a result of drug abuse.

Ellen Booth, Brake's senior campaigns officer, said: "The risks of driving on drugs are huge, and the consequences devastating - yet a huge proportion of young drivers are taking this appalling gamble with their own and others' lives."

She added that the government should consider roadside 'drugalisers' similar to those devices used to test the breath of drivers suspected of drink driving.

Recent advice from The Institute of Advanced Motorists chief examiner Peter Rodger urged people to be more aware of the danger that prescription drugs can cause while driving, such as drowsiness and a lack of concentration.
