Freeze in fuel duty 'will save drivers money'

Posted by Greg Throughton

Drivers and those who own Reich caravan taps may be pleased to hear that the chancellor of the exchequer will freeze fuel duty instead of the proposed increase in January.

At this year's autumn statement in the House of Commons, George Osborne revealed that an increase to fuel duty as planned for January will be abandoned.

Furthermore, the scheduled 5p increase to fuel tax in August 2012 will be reduced to 3p.

In a recent appearance in parliament, business secretary Vince Cable appeared to show support for an e-petition to eliminate a rise in the taxation. He appeared to back the support of the petition which urged politicians to rule out an increase in the taxation of petrol and diesel.

With reference to the freeze in duty, Osborne suggested that it could save the average family £144 a year.

Business Link showed that the current rate of fuel duty on unleaded petrol is 0.5795.
