More charging points needed for EVs, expert claims

Posted by Linda Davidson

Drivers and those who use Whale caravan taps may be thinking of buying an electric vehicle (EV) but are discouraged by a shortage of charging points on the roads.

According to an expert from privately owned vehicle management provider Leasedrive, there is a lack of infrastructure on UK roads to deal with a demand for EVs and this is preventing the technology from becoming widespread.

Roddy Graham, commercial director at the company, said that officials need to do more to encourage road users to invest in eco-friendly motors.

He added that further research on the sustainability and running time of the cars is also needed to clarify issues that some customers may have prior to purchasing an EV.

While Mr Graham commented that there are too few charging points available to meet the needs of EV customers, the progress in the development of the vehicles has been praised at the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership awards.

Judges said that the Nissan Leaf range has set the standard for the rest of the market with its innovative, environmentally friendly and above all usable design.

Mr Graham mentioned that in order for the wider market to get on board with EVs, infrastructure needs to be widely improved.
