Motorist urged to slow down for school holidays

Posted by Linda Davidson

As the school holidays start, drivers and those with Morco caravan water heaters have been urged to slow down on the roads.

Brake, the road safety charity, and Churchill Car Insurance have teamed up to drive at 20mph in built up areas, as more that four in five people worry about the safety of children on streets around their homes because of fast-moving traffic.

Following a poll by the two organisations, they found that 91 per cent of people would like motorists to drive more slowly and carefully in their area for the sake of vulnerable road users, such as children.

Some 70 per cent claim to consciously fear for their own safety when out on foot by a road.

"Whilst parents can teach children how to cross the road safely and warn them of the dangers when out playing, the lives of their loved ones are very much in the hands of drivers and whether or not they are willing to slow down," said Tony Chilcott, head of Churchill Car Insurance.

Meanwhile, a recent study by YouGov on behalf of Admiral Insurance found that 28 per cent of motorists admit drink-driving.
