Motorists are slowing down

Posted by Freddy Morton

People with Spinflo caravan hobs and cookers have been told that the roads have become safer as more drivers stick to the speed limit.

New figures from the Department for Transport has revealed that the number of cars in compliance with 30 mph speed limits has increased, while the number of pedestrians killed has fallen.

It revealed that in 1998, 69 per cent of cars were driving over the 30 mph limit, a figure that fell to 46 per cent in 2010, while those exceeding 40 mph in the same zones has halved since 2003, down to 16 per cent.

In the period between 2005 and 2010, pedestrian fatalities dropped by 40 per cent to 405.

"A combination of consistent road safety messages, new road layouts and police enforcement appears to be paying road safety dividends for city people," said Institute of Advanced Motorists director of policy and research Neil Greig.

Meanwhile, a poll by Confused.com revealed that slow drivers are UK motorists' top pet peeve.
