National Trust urges caravanners to get out and exercise

Posted by Greg Throughton

Caravan refrigeration owners planning a caravan holiday in the coming months have been urged by the National Trust to incorporate exercise into their holidays.

The Outdoor Gym Challenge is aiming to help Brits start 2011 in a healthy fashion and shed the estimated 80 million kilograms put on over the festive period.

National Trust is hoping to use the new challenge to build on recent research from the University of Essex which showed that exercising in a natural environment boosts physical and mental wellbeing.

The trust is urging people to exercise outside rather than in a gym as it could be more beneficial and also help save money.

Dr Jo Barton, a green exercise specialist with the University of Essex, said: "The effects of exercising outdoors in natural surroundings can be life changing.

"This is because of the effect it has on your mood and levels of self-esteem."

She added that a short walk on a crisp winter morning can lift your spirits and set you up for the day.
