One in nine UK vehicles 'is unsuited for driving'

Posted by Greg Throughton

Motorists with caravans and Waeco caravan fridges have been warned that roughly 11 per cent of UK vehicles are missing one or more brake lights, significantly increasing the risk of being involved in an accident and meaning they are not roadworthy by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency's standards.

The study, conducted by TescoCars.com, also revealed that the number of missing brake lights on vehicles has increased by 68 per cent.

It also found that three per cent of cars - or around one million vehicles - have only one functioning headlight.

Caravanners planning to set off on holiday over their Easter break may wish to make sure the car they are using to tow their mobile home is fully-repaired before making the trip.

Rebecca Ryan, marketing manager for Tesco Cars, said: "Our research demonstrates an alarming number of cars are missing important safety features - it's a major concern for road safety and a potentially fatal fault in low light conditions."

The government also advises that people setting off on caravan journeys should check the pressure of their tyres is at the optimum level before hitting the road.
