Pothole advice offered to motorists

Posted by Linda Davidson

Some 30 per cent of motorists have experienced damage to their car as a result of driving over a pothole, it has been revealed to owners of Truma caravan water heaters.

The recent poll by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) also found that 16 per cent of drivers have seen or been involved in an accident due to a pothole in the road.

As a result of these findings, head of training at IAM Drive and Survive Simon Elstow has offered advice to motorists about the best way of dealing with them.

He said that leaving plenty of space behind the car in front will give drivers the time to see a pothole before they hit it.

"Drivers should spare a thought for cyclists and motorcyclists who may be trying to get past a pothole, and give them a wide berth. They are entitled to a wobble and would appreciate not having a motorist attempting to overtake just as they avoid a hole in the road," Mr Elstow added.

The Highways Agency recently changed their policy towards potholes, downgrading the importance of some of the shallower examples.
