Replace fuel duty with congestion charge, report urges

Posted by Freddy Morton

Road users and those with Propex caravan water heaters may see changes made to the fuel taxation system if one controversial review is given the go ahead, reports have shown.

The Fuelcard Company has backed the recommendations from the Mirlees review, which states that congestion charges should replace fuel duty tax.

In a move that could overhaul the whole UK taxation system, the review suggests that the plans could improve driving conditions by reducing congestion and also provide a much-needed boost to the economy.

Jakes de Kock, sales and marketing director at The Fuelcard Company, said: "A system of congestion charging would level the playing field and apply to all motorists travelling in a particularly busy area."

Sir James Mirrlees made the recommendation to scrap the duty on fuel and indicates that it would make the country's charging systems fairer for all road users.

Finer details of the review have not yet been revealed but commentators already seem to agree with the proposals.

A number of high-profile international experts and researchers worked to identify the characteristics of a good tax system through the Mirlees review which could be applied to any country.
