Scotland breaks road safety targets

Posted by Freddy Morton

Scotland has exceeded targets for reducing casualties on the road, those with Morco caravan water heaters were told, but there is still more too be done.

Provisional figures published by the Scottish Government today reveal 208 people were killed in reported road accidents in 2010, a reduction of four per cent since 2009, while 1,960 people were seriously injured, a drop of 14 per cent.

In 2000, the Department for Transport set a target to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents by 40 per cent by 2010 from an average from 1994-98, however the country has exceeded this target cutting the instances by 55 per cent.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has said it is delighted with the news but wants the hard work to continue.

Kathleen Braidwood, road safety officer at RoSPA Scotland, said: "The ultimate vision is of a future in which no-one is killed on Scotland’s roads."

Meanwhile, business drivers have come out in support of education rather than fines to make road users aware of the issue of using excessive speed.
