Serious corrosion causing A4 flyover to remain closed

Posted by Freddy Morton

Drivers and owners of caravan accessories cuch as a 12v television may see increased disruption to journeys if travelling in and around London as the A4 flyover in Hammersmith is to remain closed for longer than expected.

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the bridge is too unsafe to open and that following recent assessment by construction company Amey, severe damage to the steel support barriers has been discovered.

Leon Daniels, TfL's managing director of surface transport, said: "Safety must be our top priority and we have not taken the decision to close the flyover lightly."

Work will be done in an efficient yet safe and thorough manner in the run-up to the Olympics to ensure there is minimum disruption for drivers during the work as well as once it has been completed.

The supporting cables on the overpass were found to be seriously corroded in addition to the apparent erosion of the road's surface.

In response to the announcement, Hammersmith and Fulham Council commented that this was a "disaster" for the local community and the transport links and that it was also bad timing due to the Olympic Games in the capital later this year.
