'Stay on the mainland' for a budget trip to Venice

Posted by Greg Throughton

Brits with Dometic caravan fridges may want to save on a holiday to Venice by staying on the mainland, it has been claimed.

A press office spokeswoman at the Municipality of Venice suggested that the regions of Mestre, Marghera and Chioggia are ideal options as people can then visit Venice on public transport, avoiding the imminent bed tax.

STR Global figures show that Venice reported the largest occupancy increase in the European hotel industry last month of 20.5 per cent.

The spokeswoman explained that it is too early to tell what effect the bed tax will have on tourism, as it does not come into force until August 24th.

She noted: "The amount of the tax varies according to the category of the hotel, the season and the location. Maximum tax will be five euros for five-starred hotels in high season, but could be much less according to category of hotel and distance from the centre."
