Tips to consider if you are planning a Winter Vacation

Weather

- look at the forecast for any severe weather warnings. For up to date information about travel around England go to the Highways Agency website.

Gas

- propane is most suitable for winter (in fact can be used throughout the year).

Battery

- Make sure that your leisure battery is fully charged.

Fresh water

- unless you currently have an on-board tank, put add a second container to your caravan to transfer your water pump to. Lag exposed pipes with pipe lagging.

Dehumidifier/absorption crystals

would be useful when cooking to help minimise condensation, for example use a Humidex Moisture Trap which is not too large and will absorb your cooking condensation.

Heater

- use a low wattage electrical heater such as use Halogen Effect Portable Heater to take the chill off (don't use overnight).

Awning

- ideal for retaining heat as well as handy for storing wet soggy clothing and muddy footwear.

Bedding

- look out for high tog rating duvets or sleeping-bags (anything around 15.0 tog for winter).

Clothing

- Jumpers, thick gloves, wellies, pac-a-macs and spare clothing.

Insulation

- think about using windscreen covers for your motorhome either internally with Thermal Interior Blinds or externally with Thermal Exterior Blinds.

Grip mats

such as Milenco Grip Mats, use for for muddy conditions as one of your towing accessories.

Waste water

- add anti-freeze, which should be available at plumbing centres or builders merchants, salt is definitely an alternative for plastic waste containers, but don't forget it is corrosive and cannot be used in toilets with valves etc.

Winter tyres

- consider switching your tyres to winter tyres on your tow car or motorhome. You could also consider snow chains but it very depends on where you are traveling to, but may well be a worthwhile purchase. Be careful when driving with either of these and adhere to their speed restrictions (30mph).

Other useful caravan accessories

are blankets, a fully charged mobile phone, a flask of tea/coffee, a fully charged torch, shovel and car window ice scraper.
