Tiredness at the wheel kills, warns charity

Posted by Greg Throughton

It is important to be rested before setting off in a motorhome with Cramer caravan hobs and cookers, as over ten per cent of motorists have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The startling discovery was made through research by Brake, which revealed that one in eight drivers 'head-nodded' while in control of a vehicle in the last year alone.

Head-nodding occurs when someone falls asleep for between two and 30 seconds, often without realising they have dropped off.

Some 86 per cent of people do not stop somewhere safe for a nap when they feel tired, while 29 per cent admitted putting lives at risk by continuing their journey after noticing the first signs of drowsiness.

"Tiredness at the wheel kills. Driving a vehicle is a huge responsibility that must be taken seriously. That means stopping when we feel drowsy and certainly never starting a journey tired," warned Julie Townsend, Brake's campaigns director.

The charity is also campaigning for a law recognising the needs of bereaved road crash victims.
