UK cuts road sign red tape

Posted by Freddy Morton

One of the biggest reviews into Britain's traffic signing system in 40 years is about to begin.

Transport minister Norman Baker made the announcement that will affect motorists and owners of caravan accessories today (October 13th).

It is hoped that the review will dramatically cut the number of signs councils need by relaxing rules and reducing bureaucracy, with the change expected to result in big savings for councils.

The new measures will also significantly cut red tape by allowing councils to put in place frequently used signs without needing to get government permission every time.

"Sometimes the jungles of signs and tangles of white, red and yellow lines can leave people more confused than informed. This expensive clutter can also leave our roadsides looking unsightly and unwelcoming," said Mr Baker.

Earlier this week justice secretary Kenneth Clarke also announced that causing serious injury by dangerous driving will now be a criminal driving offence carrying a sentence of up to five years.
