VisitBritain set to team up with Facebook Places

VisitBritain has joined up with Facebook Places to launch the world's first online league table of popular places created by tourists.


The unique partnership urges caravanners and other tourists in the UK to "check in" by mobile device every time they reach a notable British location and write a review for other Facebook users.


Information on the number of people visiting each attraction will then automatically update the list of the UK's Top 50 Places, which can be seen on VisitBritain's LoveUK site.


Dubbed a global guest book for Britain, it is hoped the league table will become a hugely influential barometer showing shifts in opinion about the UK's most cherished landscapes, attractions and icons.


Justin Reid, Head of Digital Marketing for VisitBritain, said: "We operate in a highly competitive market and Facebook Places offers us a smart and cost effective way of engaging directly with overseas tourists."


More than three-quarters of the 30 million travellers who came to the UK in 2009 were making return trips, according to recent VisitBritain research.
