Women advised how to drive safely when pregnant

Posted by Linda Davidson

Driving while pregnant can be a daunting experience, motorists, including owners of caravan accessories, have been told, but there are steps to take to make it safer.

Many mums-to-be are worried that should they be involved in a collision, the seatbelt may harm their baby, however, Amanda Smith from the Institute of Advanced Motorists has urged expectant mothers to belt up.

"A lot of women don't like the way belts feel but wearing a seatbelt while pregnant will not harm your baby, so buckle up before making your journey," she said.

Seatbelts are the only thing stopping occupants in the car from flying forward in a crash, so it is crucial to wear one. Pregnant women should wear the waist belt as low below the bump as possible, while the cross-body strap should also go around and over the bump.

She also advised planning in several breaks, especially when driving for long periods, as pregnant women are more prone to getting cramp in their legs.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents also recently claimed that parents are still confused about the legislation surrounding car seats for children.
