Bad tyres cause danger and high cost, warns Michelin

Posted by Freddy Morton

UK drivers and those with Reich caravan taps are wasting millions of pounds on fuel every year by driving in below-standard vehicles.

Michelin, the tyre manufacturer, said drivers should check their tyres as those that are under-inflated cause £337 million in fuel wastage annually.

The Michelin Fill Up With Air roadshow and a study carried out by the company showed that tyre checks are important in maintaining a good carbon footprint and reducing the amount of fuel wasted.

According to the study, 39 per cent of drivers have under-inflated tyres and a further nine per cent are driving around with punctures or other damages.

The roadshow aims to highlight the dangers caused to motorists through failing to maintain proper maintenance checks.

"It's crucial that drivers understand the importance of driving with the correct tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres can not only put lives at risk but they increase the stress on a vehicle's steering and suspension," Michelin's head of communications Phil Baldock said.

Euromaster ATS suggested that drivers should check their tyres to make sure they have enough grip to deal with frost and ice on the roads during the colder seasons.
