Fix the fells project launched in the Lakes

Posted by Freddy Morton

Caravan rooflights owners who enjoy taking a walk to explore the great outdoors may be interested to hear about the Fix the Fells project in the Lake District.

The Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) has launched the scheme, which calls on "footpath heroes" to donate their time to reviving some of the areas that are in disrepair.

Tasks include clearing gullies and culverts of loose gravel, as well as improving the drainage system and reducing the effects of erosion on the landscape.

The organisation has made the volunteering sessions, which will each be undertaken by four or five volunteers, as flexible as possible to fit around work and other commitments.

LDNPA volunteer co-ordinator Tim Duckmanton, said: "A lot of the volunteers I work with see it as an opportunity to give something back to a landscape which has afforded them so much pleasure."

He added that friendly faces, the country air and exercise make for an enjoyable experience surrounded by stunning countryside.

A number of projects will be taking place in the Lakes during 2011, many of which are aiming to improve flood defences and drainage.
