Government pledges £100m to repair England's roads

Posted by Freddy Morton

Caravan taps owners planning a trip in England will be delighted to hear that the government has promised £100 million of extra funding to repair roads affected by potholes.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond announced that the funding will be added to the £831 million already provided to councils in England to repair roads and the £3 billion which has been promised in the next four years.

Mr Hammond said: "I am determined to see the winter damage to our roads fixed as quickly as possible and we will be working with councils to make sure that happens."

He added that the funding should benefit motorists that have been forced to dodge potholes since the recent spell of bad weather, providing a smoother and safer ride.

The funding will be allocated to local authorities based on the number of roads they are responsible for maintaining to ensure roads are repaired as quickly as possible.

According to the AA, £9.5 billion would be needed to return all of the roads in the UK to perfect working order.
