Locks are jewel in Bingley's crown, says newspaper

The Five Rise Locks are a hidden jewel in the Bingley tourism crown, people with Smev caravan Cookers & Hobs have been told.

According to the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, the locks have been referred to as once of the seven wonders of the UK waterways, but are often hidden from public view.

British Waterways has therefore announced that it is looking at ways to increase the attraction of the Five Rise Locks to visitors, including caravanners, to make an increase on the 300,000 who already visit them each year.

"If it was marketed properly, there is little doubt the Five Rise Locks has the potential to help the district by bringing in more tourists," the source said, adding that visitors are often thrilled by the locks when they see them.

Pennine Waterways revealed that the Five Rise Locks, and a similar three-rise staircase further down the canal, opened in 1774 and has a fall of around 60 feet.
