More Brits choose to holiday in the UK

A love of the outdoors is fuelling a camping boom in the UK, owners of apparatus and accessories for your camper van were told.

Research by leisure retailer Halfords revealed that there has been an increase in popularity of camping and caravanning seen over the last two years, which shows no sign of diminishing.

It found that on average, 2.5 million Brits normally travel abroad for their Easter holidays.

However, despite the bank holiday bonanza this year, only one million will be taking a foreign holiday.

Only 20 per cent of those polled said they would be jetting off on holiday, while 35 per cent of Brits preferred to opt for a 'staycation' here in the UK.

"Customers tell us that camping is now a regular part of their holiday plans. They want great equipment at competitive prices – so they can enjoy the break without breaking the bank," explained Halfords Camping expert Paul Fensome.

Meanwhile, a study of caravanning and camping sites in Lewes district found that visitors numbers would be likely to rise if capacity was increased, the Sussex Express reported.
