Motorists urged to cut down on roadside litter

Posted by Greg Throughton

Motorhome owners with Reich caravan taps have been warned not to contribute to Britain's problem with roadside litter by dropping rubbish on the wayside.

The Highways Agency advised people setting off on long journeys to make sure they have a bin bag in the car they can use to store any rubbish, after calculating that it removes roughly 250,000 sacks of litter from Britain's roadsides annually.

A campaign in north-west England and the East Midlands last year saw the problem decrease, and the message is expected to be spread nationwide in the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Roads minister Mike Penning said he is "asking people to take one simple step towards making the roads a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone".

Litter can damage drainage systems and have a negative effect on the environment as well as being unsightly, added Mr Penning.

The government advises that motorists who see rubbish or debris on motorways or major roads should phone the Highways Agency, as it can cause an accident.
