Older drivers are UK's safest

Posted by Greg Throughton

Owners of van devices and accessories have been told that older drivers are the safest on roads in the UK.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), the perception that old people are unsafe behind the wheel is a fallacy.

"They do typically adjust their driving behaviour to match the changes in their lifestyle, and the changes in the needs of their lifestyle. Where they do become over representative in casualty statistics is dealing with junctions on higher speed roads," explained Peter Rodger, chief examiner of the Institute.

He said that older drivers are statistically safer than any other age group within the UK.

His comments follow the publication of a study into older drivers by the American Psychological Association.

It found that even healthy adults make more driving errors as they age, including potentially dangerous mistakes such as failure to check blind spots.

Mr Rodger stressed that it was important for individuals to take personal responsibility for they way they drive in order to ensure the safety of themselves and everyone around them.
