Regional bias towards south-east found in Autumn Statement

Posted by Greg Throughton

Drivers in the south-east of England who own a Truma caravan water heater could see better improvements to transport links over the coming years compared to other regions in the country, according to a new report.

An analysis of chancellor George Osborne's Autumn Statement by representatives from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) North has found that more funding is being allocated to London and other southern areas, while less will be given out to northern regions.

Ed Cox and Katie Schmuecker from the IPPR looked at the statement and published their results in a new report.

They said that plans for transport improvement projects show "regional disparities that are, at a simple level, unfair" and that they "defy the economic logic upon which they are supposedly based".

Mr Osborne announced in his statement that funding would be provided country-wide, but Mr Cox and Ms Schmuecker found this not to be the case.

Furthermore, the Department for Transport recently announced that 21 local authorities across the country would receive funding for major road development projects.
