Winter tyres could save your life

Posted by Linda Davidson

A set of winter tyres could save the life of motorists or those with appliances and accessories for your campervan, it has been claimed.

What Car? found that despite the huge safety benefits that winter tyres offer over normal rubbers in adverse weather, the Great British public either don't know or don't care.

The organisation claimed that in snow, summer tyres take more than twice the distance on average to stop than their winter counterparts, with the latter also showing far improved performance on ice and in temperatures below seven degrees C.

Nevertheless, just ten per cent of road users swapped to winter tyres last year, with a further five per cent trying but failing due to a shortage, meaning that 85 per cent of motorists did not bother.

"Winter tyres make for much safer winter driving, so we would encourage all motorists to change their tyres in the colder months. Used in this way a set of winter tyres will last motorists several years," said What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett.

The importance of winter tyres has also been stressed by a number of other car and road safety organisations.
