Dangerous drivers are avoiding disqualification

Posted by Freddy Morton

A charity has called for a reform to take dangerous, law-breaking drivers off the road, owners of van apparatus have been told.

Research published today by Brake and Direct Line revealed that 43 per cent of drivers across Britain who clock up 12 points are not being disqualified.

Many of those have obtained the points for offences such as driving uninsured, using a phone at the wheel and speeding.

It found that 10,072 motorists with 12 points or more have kept their licence and are still driving, while only marginally more have been disqualified, with the figure standing at 13,449.

"We are asking the government to act quickly to address this appalling situation. Clearly when the points system was designed, it wasn't intended that nearly half of drivers with 12 points would evade disqualification. It is outrageous," said Julie Townsend, Brake campaigns director.

Meanwhile, Mytyres.co.uk, part of Europe's leading online tyre retailer Delticom, has warned that motorists need to be prepared for bad road conditions over the winter.
