Domestic holidays 'offer flexibility'

Posted by Linda Davidson

People with caravan accessories like a 12v television may be interested to learn that Peter Hampson, chief executive at British Destinations, has praised the holiday opportunities available to people staying in the UK.

"The country is relatively small, but it is packed with a huge variety of physical geography [and] different kinds of scenery, all within relatively short travelling distance," Mr Hampson explained.

This flexibility makes it ideal for families with caravans, who can experience a number of different things with relatively little travelling.

Mr Hampson added that the familiarity of the domestic travel market - which makes it easy to book and plan - is another factor in the increasing popularity of staycationing.

He explained that while many British people had booked a holiday in the UK initially because they wanted to save money, they have now realised it can often be just as good as going abroad.

Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt recently called on Britons to stay at home this summer and enjoy the wide variety of activities available, including the London 2012 Olympic Games.
