Government 'needs solid plans for carbon reductions'

Drivers with a Dometic caravan fridge may be on the side of one eco-awareness group that says the government must do more to tackle carbon emissions.

The Environmental Audit Committee has claimed in a report that the government is putting thousands of lives at risk by failing to properly implement strategies to cut emissions and is instead spending more time on watering down EU air pollution rules.

Alan Andrews, air quality lawyer at ClientEarth, a group of lawyers working on behalf of environmental policies that also backs the committee's warning, said: "The report makes it clear that the government is failing in its legal and moral duty to protect the British public from the harmful health effects of air pollution."

Many of the leading parties' plans will not achieve compliance until 2020 or later, according to ClientEarth, which commented that this could be too late and up to 15 years after the deadline set by the EU.

Mr Andrews suggested that a solid plan needs to be founded by the coalition in order to deal with the problem before it is too late.
