Motorists need to be prepared for winter

Posted by Freddy Morton

Although September has only just begun and winter feels a long way off, it is time for owners of Dometic caravan fridges to start thinking about tyres for icy conditions.

Road charity Tyresafe took to an ice rink to compare the performance of summer and winter tyres using products provided by Michelin.

Two cars were tested stopping dead from a speed of 15mph, with the winter tyres boasting a stopping distance of 7.01m compared to the summer tyres' 9.75m, a difference of 40 per cent.

Tyresafe urged drivers, if a 40 per cent difference is seen at a paltry 15mph, to imagine the impact winter tyres could have on stopping from motorway speeds.

"Based on the two previous winters and with some forecasters predicting another harsh one, motorists are urged to think seriously about fitting winter tyres to ensure they stay safe and mobile over this difficult driving period," the charity said.

Last winter the AA advised road users to carry out basic checks on their vehicles and pack a winter driving kit including warm clothing, blankets, food and drink, torch, road atlas and fully-charged mobile.
