North-east 'strong area for caravanning'

Posted by Linda Davidson

Caravanners considering a trip to the north-east with their motorhome and 12v caravan TV could pay a visit to Burtree Gate in Darlington, which has been purchased by new owners after Discover Leisure went into administration in October.

The site will now be controlled by family-run Kimberly Caravans and Motorhomes, according to the Northern Echo. It will reopen to visitors next month.

Kimberly Caravans already owns a site just off the M1 with an annual turnover of around £5 million.

Managing director Chris Lowe said the firm has been considering expanding its operation for some years and decided this was the best opportunity to do so.

He added that it had been aware of the park's reputation as a busy and exciting holiday destination in the 1970s and hoped to bring it back to its heyday.

"We know that the branch has many loyal customers, going back to when it was part of Barons, who will appreciate the care and attention of a family-run business," explained Mr Lowe.

The north-east of England has a number of attractions which could appeal to caravanners, including heritage trails and the impressive architecture of Durham.
