The 'lost Lake District' has a lot to offer

Posted by Greg Throughton

The Lake District has a great deal to offer caravan refrigeration owners but there are some areas of the National Park which offer more than most people imagine.

Writing for the BBC's Countryfile website, Neil Coates said that very few tourists venture into the south-western corner of Cumbria.

He added that those who do are rewarded with some stunning scenery, with looming fells dotted with sleepy towns, windswept beaches and ancient monuments all on offer.

Mr Coates recommended heading to the picturesque village of Cartmel, famous for its sticky toffee pudding, and the market town of Ulverston, which was home to the late comedian Stan Laurel.

He also advises visiting the Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an outlying exposure of the limestone that characterises much of the peninsulas and Arnside Knott to take in the spectacular views from its summit.

Mr Coates described the area of Furness and the Lake District Peninsulas as a "land of mystery and imagination, seclusion and seduction".

The Lake District has a number of events taking place throughout 2011 for caravanners to take part in, such as the Fix the Fells project and the Lake Epic mountain bike race.
