Winter roads 'require vehicle preparation'

Posted by Linda Davidson

Drivers and those who own a Truma caravan water heater should carefully prepare their vehicles to deal with winter roads, according to one organisation.

Manheim Auctions surveyed motorists and found that many were failing to make adequate changes to their vehicle to make sure they were prepared for wet, cold and icy conditions.

The questionnaire also found that many drivers do not consider carrying supplies with them in case of an emergency, such as extra caravan accessories, warm clothing, torches, shovels and jump leads.

Results showed that 33 per cent would carry warm clothing, while 25 per cent would take jump leads in case of a breakdown.

Craig Mailey, marketing director at the company, added: "Preparing for winter is second nature to many people but it goes beyond just carrying an ice scraper and de-icer. You need to prepare for the possibility of being stuck in traffic for long periods."

There is a higher likelihood of accidents occurring during the darker winter months, according to road safety charity Brake.
